My biggest regret about George Bush's presidencies and their secrecy, lies, manipulations and strongarming was that George Bush did represent many of the American people. The charm of a pseudo-Southerner, phony accent and all, rejecting his own elitist history and faking being just a ranch owner from Texas who made good on the American dream, the fallacy of a religious commitment to truth and personal responsibility, the vision of a "true" American were pedaled and sold to the American people like a cheap umbrella on a street corner. The cries of small government, proven to be lies by the number of jobs that have been added to government while every other field except the health industry has faced decimation, the fiscal responsibility of a conservative who has grown our national debt to sky high numbers...still maintaining a few supporters is remarkable. Until we look at what's being sold by McCain. His ads are among the meanest ever witnessed, his supporters are among the most outrageous ever filmed actually calling for the death of another candidate. If he won, like Bush's election, it would be a miserable commentary of a person who represents the US.
Arguing over the specifics of proposed legislation is irrelevant when you elect a person of the character that allows for what we've observed so far...win at all costs. A man who treats his opposition with such disrespect that he won't even look at him, let alone dialogue with him is not a man who cares about the little people. A man who allows fellow citizens to call for the murder of a candidate without an immediate and unequivocal response is not a man who should negotiate with the threats to our country from others. A man who chooses someone who has worked the system to its limits in order to capitalize on governmental money, benefits and influence, is not someone who really gives a darn about citizens. McCain is fluent in the language of war, it is his experience, it is what he knows. But a warrior without a war is still a fighter and with no one else to battle, he turns on his own, fellow citizens.
John McCain has shown that he is a warrior, who will do anything to win, even listen to threats against the life of his opposition. And you think that he will care about your bankruptcy from illness? Will he worry at night that you with skin cancer are not as lucky as he is and cannot afford continuing treatment because of federally provided benefits? Will he worry about homeowners who did nothing more wrong than not marry someone whose money can buy them all the stuff our society offers? While reporters consider the features of the candidates' plans, let's not ignore the most important question...which candidate will likely do something meaningful to solve the greed of health insurers, the lack of controls on the cost of medical care and the fact that Americans who get sick face bankruptcy?
