The decision has already been made. After years of difficulty, in May 2008, the US Court of Appeals mandated that US currency be made accessible to the blind and visually impaired because of the continued violation of the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
Implementing this decision would be a wise digression from the let's throw money at this problem approach of the Obama Administration and could signal a true intolerance of the lack of transparency and robber baron politics that have people, including me, fed up.
We're reading about the schizophrenic back and forth between Obama and himself--authorizing AIG bailout and then expressing "outrage" at the bonuses paid out because nothing was done BEFORE THE FACT to address the bonuses issue. Signing a Federal Budget that gives raises to Federal employees while expressing COMMITMENT to the average US citizen facing job/benefit loss.
And now the INFRASTRUCTURE fiasco will unfold before our eyes. As contractors receive contracts and federal dollars, there is nothing included to prevent the hiring or illegals to perform the work...can't wait to see the "OUTRAGE" expressed as the estimated number of jobs falls far short of the phony numbers of potential jobs created as the justification for throwing out money with insufficient restrictions on the use of such money.
So what does the decision requiring a currency change that accommodates the challenges to the blind in dealing with our currency?
First, it offers an opportunity to comply with the law within a reasonable period of time for an Administration whose timeline seems to constantly ignore the fact that they have FOUR years, not five, not ten, not twenty.
Second, if done in the way the transition to the Euro was conducted, the US government can probably hook its tax collecting mitts on millions in cash stashes from the Congressman with $90,000 in his fridge to the independent businessman with stockpiled cash to the safety deposit boxes with cash in them.
Third, if the Treasury department does it right, it's a way of bringing people OUTSIDE the system of taxation into the system so that everyone is paying their fair share of taxes.
So instead of tossing money out and then being "outraged", perhaps the Administration could work on an effective currency change to comply with legal and court mandates and replace our current legal tender with new legal tender.
