As healthy people shop for the cheapest insurance because they are less concerned about coverage than premium cost, it will be interesting to see the reaction of those competitive shoppers when they are pegged with a pre-existing condition.
Whether it's osteoporosis, or recurring bladder infections, the downside of having everything checked and moderated is that your insurance rates will probably be higher than they might otherwise have been.
Pre-cancerous cells, fibroid tumors, you name it you will probably be considered as having a pre-existing condition.
While pre-existing conditions are often legislated by states as an unlawful reason for denying insurance coverage, paying extra for such coverage is not illegal. As more and more people realize that their healthy except for.... minor ailment makes them less insurable, perhaps consumers will realize that we need a reformed insurance product that does what insurance was intended for which is to cover the expense of needed medical care and treatment. In conjunction with this demand, we must also put the brakes on health care providers who are using their screenings like new toys and send people once, twice, even three times a year for screenings because, why not?
It is the control of costs and the reform of a financial vehicle for paying for health care that will change the current industry.
The saddest part of this exploitation based on the greed of health care providers and health insurers is that the whole push for PREVENTIVE care will now be impacted as people forego a checkup that will likely result in them having some pre-pre- condition that will force them to spend money on continuing tests and increased health insurance costs as they become one of the masses with a pre-existing condition. What I believe insurers will do next is REQUIRE this preventive approach because like health insurance itself, people will opt out of this scam.
